All the News that No One Else will Publish

Yes, that's my blog. I watched "Emma" tonight and now feel like a crass boor. Yes, that's what I typed: crass boor. Also known as a bull in a china shop. That's me. Crashing through personalities as if they were nothing more than amusements. Ah, well. Live and learn!

Anyway, why I'm really typing away at 10:42 pm on Friday night is to try to explain how to subscribe to my blog. If you click on the "Feed" button you will go to this page which gives you a choice of three different types of so-called "News Readers" (so called because they were developed to sort news – some actually find this invigorating). The one I understand best is web-based because it uses a browser. I went to Yahoo! to try to figure out how to use theirs and couldn't find a single link to it on their home page or in My Yahoo! Silly. If it's so great, why can't I find it???

Much the easiest thing is to download a little mini-application that will let you search through news and blogs and then read just the stories that interest you. For that type, Feedburner (my syndicater) has an active link to the Feed Demon free download. So, try that first ... unless, of course, like me you are on a Mac in which case you will need something else (like Safari on Tiger – by far the easiest way to subscribe but difficult to search).

Here's a really good list of newsreaders. I recommend Feed for the Mac. It's free and easy to use. Only don't click on the "feed" button after you get to the XML page. Copy and paste the URL into Feed's "New Feed" window. (Confused? I would be if I were reading this.) Once you have subscribed, you then have to click on the link to read the full article. But I mean I had to go to the site first to get the link ... oh, well.

So, there you have it. Get a newsreader, search for "alien drifter" and you won't find it. You also won't find it by searching for "Greywalker." However, if you go to the iTunes music store, and click on "Podcasts" and then go to "Arts & Entertainment" and choose "Poetry" you will see "alien drifter podcasts" pretty close to the top of the list. Or, you can search Podcasts for "Greywalker" and it pops right up.

All this aggregater stuff seems like a lot of work to just read news. I guess I'm just not that into it. I'd much rather click the "next blog" button and be done with it. News is so depressing anyway. When was the last time you saw a big headline that read "98% of the World's Population Committed No Crime Today!!"? My guess: never. Or how about "98% of the World's Population Did NOT Suffer a Natural Disaster Today!!"? Again: never. Just goes to show you, doesn't it? We're all so bored we get hungry for tragedy and disaster and crime.

Which is where I came in, isn't it? All the news that no one else will publish. You got it first – right here.
