365: Sky 70 - cloud hands

On the verge of changing this project to "cloud-a-day" instead of sky-a-day.

365: Sky 69 - context

Sky needs a context. This view is different from one with lots of people on a sunny day. And the clouds need a reference so you can tell how big they are. Fortunately the gray values of the ground and the sky were in the same gamut, so this worked.

Noticing how often I focus on clouds when I look at the sky. So, what is sky? Is the blue/black backdrop? The clouds? Stuff in the sky? Has to be all that.

365: Sky 68 - sunrise

The sun has nearly reached its farthest north position which from this vantage is far to the left. I'd love to see it rise. The view is blocked with trees and houses. I was trying to capture the pink russet in the upper clouds and the grayed blue clouds at the bottom. Colors that I only see in nature. So difficult to transmit.

365: Sky 67 - untitled

There really are just two options with a sky: blown out with good foreground, or foreground like this with good sky. Unless you modify your camera. Still not sure how deeply I want to get into the whole camera thing.

365: Sky 66 - dark as dark

Looks kind of underwater, in a way. It has no ground plane. I was attempting to depict space. heh. The clouds don't wrap around. It's a flat world in Bryce.

365: Sky 65 - impressionism colors

Yesterday's sky recolored using one of the historical palettes from Adobe Illustrator: the Impressionism palette.

This project is not as transformative as the Retrospective project. That one was more time consuming. But it really did something to me. This project is more gentle and not as stirring. I am looking at skies a lot more, especially clouds. I've had vague fleeting desires to look up the white cloud syndrome to see when it started, or if it has been documented. Emphasis on vague and also on fleeting.

365: Sky 63 - gradients

Created in Illustrator using some techniques culled from this tutorial

I am beginning my seasonal fascination with white skies. I first noticed them hanging over Fairfax VA in the 1970's. Since then, they have grown wider southwards. (Could be in other directions, too, but I don't go those ways.) Today I saw my first Richmond white sky of the season. I am not happy.

365: Sky 62 - Strange Mood

Strange Mood (July 2010)

This may be a repeat ... or not. Anyway, it's for yesterday. I realized around 8:00 pm that I hadn't posted a sky and just blew it off. Since it says on page 3 that there are no rules, I'm going to go with that. This means I still have to post for today, though.

365: SKy 59 - Warhol in PIttsburgh

Some might have asked for clear blue skies during a visit. I am quite content with these clouds during my 2009 visit to Pittsburgh. The mood was perfect for visiting the Warhol museum. More on the clouds in the photo below.

365: Sky 58 - at the beach

Norfolk, early morning in spring (2003)
It's not always lovely at the beach. Thank goodness.

365: Sky 57 - Vast

The rain clouds have been coming and going. Here's some passing through. It rained later.

365: Sky 56 - Forest Hill Park

Sudden urge to know more about taking good sky pictures took me to the bookstore to look at photography books. This is a typical good sky with overexposed surroundings. The sky is the main part of the photo, of course, but would like to get the green also.

Took other photos that have a blown-out sky. Need to read the fabulous camera manual and discover what is in there to help avoid white sky. I could not fix it in Photoshop. There wasn't enough information to build/edit from.

Also, a little scary to become the person who carries around a camera. I feel obnoxious and elitist. But it's just a camera. Not too terribly fancy. And I'm fairly discreet or at least nonchalant.

About two hours after this was taken there was a rain storm.

365: Sky 55 - fancy night

I like the green shine. No idea what it is or how it got there. I like it anyway. Still not happy with the stars. And, again, lots of time spent on rendering the dark shape in the foreground which has not much detail that I can see. Apparently the ray tracer thinks it does.

365: Sky 54 - tropical again

This version without the blue. Still having trouble getting sand to look like sand and be a sand-like color. I shall persist ... I hope.

365: Sky 52 & 53 - not my fault

Yesterday morning.

Yesterday afternoon.
Blogger went read-only yesterday so I couldn't post my sky. Today's sky looks like yesterday afternoon, only with lest contrast and color. Perhaps I'll post it tomorrow.

365: Sky 52 - dull

This is close to what the sky looked like this morning. Before noon it turned to clear blue and summery. I prefer the complex gray, dull sky. The clouds were swirled and ribbed. I wish I had been able to photograph it.

365: Sky 51 - apart II

365: Sky 50 - July 2010

For yesterday. I missed, again. Ominous! This sky is last summer during a (duh!) full moon. It lost a lot in translation to picture. It was a magical night. I am often entranced by the muted lights of night.

365: Sky 47 - undead

Supposed to be a night sky. Turned into something on planet Pluto. Or the moon of Endor. Or that little squiggly planet out past the edge of the universe. You know the one, just past the cafe.

365: Sky 46 - tourquoise

A sky needs something to be against – like a foreground. If it's to be recognized and fully appreciated as sky.

365: Sky 44 - n

Since I missed yesterday there are two today. I made this one to get rid of the blue cast. Still have no idea where it comes from. I made a whole new sky. Oh, and I softened the mountain. I like the colorful texture. Not sure what part of reality it refers to but it's pretty.
